Understanding Defensive Metrics: DRS, UZR, and OAA Explained

Defensive metrics attempt to quantify fielding value, one of baseball's most challenging statistical frontiers. DRS (Defensive Runs Saved) measures runs prevented compared to average, incorporating range, arm strength, and double play ability. UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating) divides the field into zones and credits players for plays made in each zone. OAA (Outs Above Average) uses Statcast data to measure fielder performance based on catch probability. Each system has strengths and limitations, but together they provide much better defensive evaluation than traditional fielding percentage. Elite defenders can provide several wins of value annually through superior range and reliability.
